Historic homes have earned their color identities over decades — sometimes centuries — and jumping off the historic spectrum almost always looks wrong. These are the color families that work in each of our SC markets, and the specific SW/BM historic lines to source them from.
Why historic colors are different
Historic homes were painted when pigment chemistry was limited, so the palettes are naturally muted, warm, and aged-toned. Modern bright pigments on a 150-year-old single house look like a cartoon.
Charleston: the pastel tradition
Rainbow Row-style pastels: faded pinks, buttery yellows, soft peaches, muted teals, always with white trim. Historic Charleston Foundation maintains an official palette.
Beaufort: antebellum whites
Historic whites with pale-cream undertone — never bright white. Dark green or black shutters. SW Alabaster, BM White Dove, BM Simply White in the right register.
Hilton Head: coastal neutrals
Faded sage, driftwood gray, weathered blue. SW Sea Salt, BM Revere Pewter, Restoration Hardware Silver Sage.
Columbia: brick and trim combinations
Older Columbia homes often combine painted brick (cream or sage) with deep historic trim (Hale Navy, Dorian Gray).

Questions we get about this
Can I use a modern color on a historic home?
Yes, but historic-light tones almost always integrate better. A bright modern color on a heritage facade reads jarring.
Do HOAs require specific historic collections?
Some do; most just require the approval process. See the HOA guide.
Do historic paints cost more?
Slight premium (10–15%) on specialty lines. Standard historic lines at SW/BM price the same as their normal lineup.
