After 15+ years painting across SC — from coastal Hilton Head to upstate Greenville — these are the brands that consistently hit their published performance specs in our humidity. The ranking is based on real field performance, not marketing.
How we rank them
Field performance at 3, 5, and 7 years; humidity tolerance during application; color consistency batch-to-batch; local availability; warranty support.
#1: Sherwin-Williams
Our daily driver. Emerald and Duration lines at the top, SuperPaint at mid-tier, ProMar 200 for commercial. Strong in humidity, excellent availability, consistent batches.
#2: Benjamin Moore
Aura and Regal Select are performance-equivalent to Sherwin top tier. Color library advantage. Availability weaker in SC.
#3: Pittsburgh Paints (PPG)
Manor Hall and Break-Through lines are strong performers. Often specced on commercial work. Residential share smaller.
#4: Behr (Pro line only)
Retail Behr is builder-grade. Behr Pro (Home Depot pro-desk) is competitive with mid-tier Sherwin. Value option when budget is tight.
#5: Specialty — Romabio, Fine Paints of Europe
For historic homes or high-design applications. Romabio mineral paints for stucco. Fine Paints for heritage trim work. Premium pricing.
What to avoid
House-brand paints from big-box stores; anything labeled "paint and primer in one" that costs under $40/gallon; any oil-based exterior from any brand (humidity issue).
Questions we get about this
Do different brands cost different amounts?
At equivalent tiers, within $10–15/gallon of each other. Tier matters more than brand.
Can we get any brand you don't usually carry?
Yes — we spec to your request and source.
Does the brand affect warranty?
We warranty the labor and adhesion regardless of brand. Paint manufacturer warranties vary and we walk you through them.
