Sheen (the shininess level of the paint) is half the decision — the other half of color selection that most homeowners don't think about until they're in the store. The wrong sheen makes a color read wrong, makes walls show flaws, or makes cleaning a losing battle. Here's the right default for every room type.
The sheen spectrum
Flat → Matte → Eggshell → Satin → Semi-gloss → Gloss. Lower sheens hide imperfections, higher sheens clean better.
Ceilings: flat or matte
Always. Ceiling flat hides drywall seams, texture variation, and lighting unevenness. Only exception: bathroom ceilings get matte ceiling paint with mildew-resistant additive.
Bedrooms and living rooms: matte or eggshell
Low-traffic, adult-use rooms. Matte for rich color presentation. Eggshell if you expect to wash walls occasionally.
Hallways and kids' rooms: eggshell or satin
Eggshell for moderate wear; satin for high-traffic or kid rooms with handprints and crayon.
Kitchens and bathrooms: satin
Washable, moisture-tolerant, still looks warm (not plastic like semi-gloss). Default for both rooms.
Trim and doors: semi-gloss
Durable, washable, distinctly different sheen from walls (visual definition). Semi-gloss is the Lowcountry standard for trim.
Cabinets: semi-gloss or satin
Semi-gloss for traditional looks; satin for a more modern muted feel. Both are cleanable; the cabinet paint itself (waterborne alkyd) matters more than the sheen choice.
When to break the rules
Matte on trim for a contemporary aesthetic (trade-off: less washable). Eggshell on ceilings in very modern rooms. Flat in baths only with premium flat + a really strong fan.
Questions we get about this
Can different rooms have different sheens?
Yes — and they should. Uniform sheen across a house is a builder shortcut, not a design choice.
Does higher sheen cost more?
Slightly (5–10% on material). Labor is identical.
Can I change sheen without changing color?
Yes — same color code, different product line. Common request for trim re-freshes.
