One Coat vs Two Coats: When the Extra Coat Matters (And When It's a Waste)

Color shift, coverage, warranty implications, and the two scenarios where one coat is actually enough.

"Two coats" is the professional default on almost every residential paint job. Paint manufacturers test their products assuming two coats, warranty them assuming two coats, and publish film-thickness specs assuming two coats. The "one-coat" paint marketing you see in TV ads is selectively true for specific color combinations on properly primed surfaces — a small fraction of the actual paint jobs you'll ever hire.

The industry-standard spec

Two coats over a compatible primer. Total dry film thickness 3–5 mils. This is what Sherwin, BM, Zinsser, and every major manufacturer specify for warranty coverage.

What "one-coat coverage" marketing means

It means: when the new color is similar to the old color (white over white, light gray over light gray), one coat may achieve visual uniformity. It does NOT mean proper film thickness, long-term durability, or manufacturer warranty coverage.

When two coats is mandatory

  • Any color change (light-over-dark or dark-over-light)
  • Any sheen change (matte over satin, etc.)
  • All exterior work without exception
  • Cabinets and trim regardless of color
  • Any surface where warranty matters

The two cases one coat is enough

(1) Touch-up work on an existing painted wall with the exact same paint batch. (2) Very light color-over-light-color on walls in occupied rooms where the homeowner explicitly accepts limited durability in exchange for faster turnaround.

Color shift and sheen uniformity

One-coat walls often read unevenly under raking light even when the color looks uniform straight-on. The second coat evens the sheen across the surface in addition to deepening the color.

Warranty implications

Our warranty is written against the two-coat spec. One-coat jobs (by customer request) are explicitly excluded from coating warranties.

What to spec

Two coats over primer on new surfaces; two coats direct on existing properly-prepped surfaces. Skip the primer only on scuffed existing paint in the same color family.

Frequently Asked

Questions we get about this

Can you give me a one-coat price?

Yes, as a specific request with warranty exclusion noted on the contract. Roughly 65–70% of the two-coat price.

Does primer count as a coat?

No — primer and topcoat serve different functions. Two-coat spec means two topcoat layers over primer.

How much does the second coat actually cost?

Labor is roughly 45–55% of the first coat's labor (setup is done), plus paint material. Net increase to the job is 25–35%.
