Paint, Reface, or Replace Your Cabinets? (Cost + Longevity Breakdown)

A decision framework with real 2026 ranges, what each option actually fixes, and when refacing is a trap.

Kitchens are the single most over-invested room in American remodeling. The average full kitchen replacement in our market now runs $45,000–$90,000 once countertops, flooring, and plumbing are factored. Meanwhile, a refinish on the same boxes — often the same rack of doors — can deliver 80% of the visual transformation for 15% of the cost. The trick is knowing when paint is the right answer, when refacing makes sense, and when the layout is actually the problem and no paint job will save you. Here's the framework we use on every in-home consult.

What each option actually changes

  • Painting (refinishing): Same boxes, same doors, same hardware holes. New color and new finish. Keeps your existing layout, hardware, and interior storage.
  • Refacing: Same boxes, new door and drawer fronts + new skin on the box faces. You keep the layout and the interior storage.
  • Replacing: New boxes, new doors, optionally new layout. Everything changes. Often paired with countertop and backsplash replacement.

2026 cost ranges side-by-side

For a typical 30-linear-foot kitchen with 25–40 doors:

  • Paint: $3,500–$7,500 all-in
  • Reface: $12,000–$25,000
  • Replace (boxes and doors, same layout): $18,000–$40,000
  • Replace (full remodel with layout change): $45,000–$100,000+

The 4 questions that pick the winner

  1. Are the boxes structurally sound? If yes → paint or reface. If no (water damage, particle board breakdown) → replace.
  2. Do you like the door style? If yes → paint. If no → reface or replace.
  3. Do you like the layout? If yes → paint or reface. If no → full replace.
  4. What's the budget ceiling? Under $10K → paint. $10–30K → reface or partial replace. $30K+ → replace.

If the answer to 1, 2, and 3 is "yes" and the budget is under $10K, paint wins almost every time.

When refacing is a trap

Refacing sits in an uncomfortable middle ground. It costs three to four times what painting costs, delivers new door style but same boxes, and when you compare it to a full replacement with cheap doors, the price gap often narrows to $5–10K. In that window, many homeowners correctly spend the extra and get new everything. Rule of thumb: if the reface quote is within 35% of the replace quote, replace wins on 5-year value.

Spray vs. brush for refinishing

The finish quality difference between brush-roll and HVLP spray is dramatic on cabinets — spray delivers a factory-smooth finish; brushed work is perceptibly textured. We spray 100% of our cabinet refinishes; doors are removed and sprayed in-shop, boxes are masked-and-sprayed on-site. See our spray vs brush blog post for the technical detail.

How long each option lasts

  • Paint (properly prepped, sprayed): 8–15 years before needing refresh.
  • Reface: 15–25 years; doors are new so they age like new cabinets.
  • Replace: 20–40 years depending on box quality.

What to do if the layout is the problem

No amount of paint fixes a kitchen where the fridge is 8 feet from the stove, the island has no overhang for seating, or the working triangle doesn't work. In that case, paint is wasted money — you'll redo it in 18 months when you finally commit to the remodel. If layout is the real issue, skip to a design-build consultation.

Frequently Asked

Questions we get about this

How long does a cabinet refinish take?

5–10 working days depending on door count. Doors leave day one, come back sprayed and ready to rehang day 6–9.

Can we use the kitchen during the refinish?

Yes, with some inconvenience. Box surfaces are sprayed in 1–2 days on-site, then doors return. Cooking and countertop use are largely unaffected.

What brand of paint do you use on cabinets?

We spec Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane for most jobs; Benjamin Moore Advance where the color match calls for it. Both are waterborne alkyds that cure as hard as oil without the yellowing.
