Stain, semi-transparent, or solid — what your wood actually needs.
Pressure-treated pine, cedar, mahogany, and composite all behave differently. We start by identifying what you have, what shape it's in, and whether you want to see grain or hide it.
Older decks usually need a soft-wash, sand, and a semi-transparent or solid stain to even out color. Newer pressure-treated wood needs a year to dry before it accepts a finish — we'll tell you straight if it's not ready.
Metal railings, gates, and ornamental fences get rust-treatment, prime, and a urethane-modified finish that holds up against salt air.

The Deck Prep That Makes Stain Last Twice as Long
Why the cleaning and sanding steps matter more than the stain you pick — and exactly how we do them.
Read post →Stain or solid color?
Stain shows the grain and weathers gradually; solid hides imperfections and gives you a painted look. We help you decide based on the wood's condition and what you want long-term.
How often does a deck need re-coating?
Most SC decks need a refresh every 2–4 years depending on sun exposure and wood species. Solid finishes last longer than transparent stains.
Can you paint a wet deck?
No. The wood needs to dry to spec moisture (usually 12–15%) before any finish goes on. We measure it.
Do you do composite decks?
Composite generally doesn't need or want paint. We can clean and brighten composite, and refinish the metal/wood railings around it.
What about pressure-treated lumber that's brand new?
Brand-new PT needs at least 6–12 months to dry before it will hold a finish. We'll let you know at the estimate.
